FAO report 'Forests for food' highlights role of forests in fighting hunger

Save
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN, with the Landscape Alliance, has published "Forests for food: Nourishing people, sustaining the planet". It stresses the role of forests in reducing hunger and poverty and urges countries to include them in agrifood system policies. In parts of Africa some communities get up to 80% of daily protein from wild meat; in the Amazon fish make up 44% of food consumed by weight. A 28-country European survey found 90% eat at least one forest food yearly. India's Indigenous communities are major users of wild forest foods, and studies link greater forest cover to more diverse diets and less child stunting.
