Sustainable Agriculture Milestones: Tree-Based Multi-Layer Model Multiplies Income and Shields Ecosystems from Severe Droughts

In a prestigious international achievement putting the subcontinent's regenerative agricultural practices on the global map, Mr. Valluvan, a civil engineer-turned-farmer from Pollachi in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, has been officially honored as a 'Soil Farmer Hero' by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Securing the third prize in the global *'Soil Health Guardians'* competition, his landmark transition from loss-making monoculture into a thriving multi-layered ecosystem serve as an elite global model. Concurrently, the Union Agriculture Minister has launched the month-long 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' to scale up soil health protections across all farming blocks.

The 14-Crop Layered Ecosystem and the Chemical Fertilizer Mitigation Drive

The ecological overhauls combine localized organic farming mastery with nationwide chemical fertilizer reduction frameworks:

  • The Multi-Layer Agroforestry Success: Confronting severe financial deficits where maintenance costs exceeded raw coconut returns, Mr. Valluvan overhauled his 11-hectare land holding with guidance from the *'Save Soil - Cauvery Calling'* initiative. He integrated a 14-crop multi-layered web—cultivating **nutmeg, pepper, seven varieties of banana, turmeric, elephant yam, and curry leaves** beneath the tall coconut canopy.
  • Revolutionary Soil Carbon Metric Surges: Through extensive biological mulching and zero-tillage loops, the farm's **soil organic carbon (SOC) content experienced a massive surge, climbing from a mere 0.52% to an extraordinary 3.36%**. This vertical expansion tripled his average annual income to ₹2.5–3 lakh per acre and dropped water requirements to one-tenth of traditional levels, keeping the farm fully green during the severe 2017 subcontinental drought.
  • The Khet Bachao Abhiyan Mandate: On the national policy axis, the Ministry of Agriculture mobilized the *Khet Bachao Abhiyan* campaign. This extensive national drive is task-mandated to **curb the excessive, unscientific application of chemical fertilizers—particularly urea—** while deploying financial incentives to help smallholders adopt soil-test-based bio-fertilizers and organic compost grids.
