On 28 September 2026, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) performed its third gravity assist around Earth, adding roughly 12,606 km/h (3.5 km/s) to its speed during the flyby. In a gravity assist, also known as a slingshot manoeuvre, a spacecraft uses the gravity and motion of a planet to alter its speed and course, which saves fuel. JUICE is meant to investigate Jupiter and its icy moons, with special focus on Ganymede, the biggest moon in the Solar System. The probe is scheduled to go into orbit around Jupiter in 2031 and around Ganymede in 2034.
