India has unveiled its first Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype, built by the ePlane Company, a startup incubated at IIT Madras in Chennai. An eVTOL aircraft runs on electric power and can rise and land vertically like a helicopter, so it needs very little runway space. The prototype is seen as an important step towards Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), a concept in which small electric aircraft provide short-distance urban and regional transport, easing road congestion. The achievement also highlights Tamil Nadu's growing role in aerospace innovation.
