Astronomers have confirmed Elias 2-24 b as the youngest planet known, less than 1 million years old. It circles the star Elias 2-24, roughly 450 light-years away, and has a mass comparable to Jupiter. The planet sits in a gap within its protoplanetary disk and is still pulling in material. Its existence was first inferred from the disk gap in 2017, and it was later confirmed using the W. M. Keck Observatory, ALMA and the Very Large Telescope (VLT).
