The Election Commission of India has recognised Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a State Party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry after it fulfilled the prescribed conditions. Earlier a registered unrecognised party, TVK can now have its 'Whistle' symbol reserved. In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election it won 108 of the 233 seats it contested with a 34.92% vote share, and in Puducherry 2 of 28 seats with 16.85%. A party qualifies as a State Party by meeting any one test, such as 6% of valid votes plus 2 Assembly seats, 3% of Assembly seats or 3 seats, or 8% of total valid votes.
