Sculptures and inscriptions from the Early Chola period have been found on the bed of the Cauvery near Musiri. Idols of Dakshinamurthy and Vinadhara Shiva lay about 200 metres from the river bund and probably belonged to a ruined temple. A stone slab bears two Tamil inscriptions of the 10th century CE: one records a gift of 120 kasu (ancient coins) to the sabha of Mahendramangalam to keep two perpetual lamps burning in a temple, and the other notes tax-free land given to the temple as devadana. Pillar fragments, roof parts and a large Shiva Linga were also found.
