The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has launched the Dumpsite Remediation Accelerator Programme (DRAP) under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, aiming to reach "Lakshya Zero Dumpsites" by September 2026.
The programme will clear legacy waste dumpsites and turn them into green zones. Around 8.8 crore metric tonnes of legacy waste at 214 dumpsites in 202 Urban Local Bodies have been taken up on priority. Legacy waste is old municipal solid waste piled up in landfills over many years; such sites release leachate (polluted liquid) and landfill gases like methane and carbon dioxide.
