Next-Generation Drone Warfare: Extended-Range Fire-and-Forget Weapon System Cleared for Serial Production

In a major development for autonomous defense configurations, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully executed the decisive final phase trials of its indigenously developed **UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM-V3)**. Conducted at the National Open Area Range (NOAR) near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, the flight trials utilized an integrated Ground Control System to validate the missile's tracking capabilities against both moving armored ground formations and low-altitude aerial threats, clearing the platform for immediate mass assembly line manufacturing.

The Technical Architecture and Deep Seeker Matrix

The ULPGM-V3 (also designated as ULM-ER) represents a significant technological leap over legacy unguided drone munitions, featuring an advanced structural engineering setup:

  • Guidance and Day-Night Seeker: Weighing a lightweight 12.5 kg, the fire-and-forget missile features an advanced **high-definition dual-channel Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker** paired with laser guidance and passive homing. This allows tactical drones to execute precise engagements in high-altitude terrains during both day and night conditions.
  • Kinetic and Warhead Capabilities: Driven by a dual-thrust smokeless solid fuel rocket motor, the weapon functions from a maximum launch altitude of 4 km. It carries a potent **tandem-charge pre-fragmented warhead** designed to defeat main battle tanks equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) via high-impact top-attack flight profiles.
  • Two-Way Datalink: The system includes an integrated two-way digital datalink pipeline, allowing ground operators to perform real-time re-targeting, mid-course flight corrections, and video telemetry streaming over a maximum operational range of 10 km.
  • Public-Private Production: Developed primarily by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) under the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, the platform will enter serial production through Development cum Production Partners (DcPP), explicitly including **Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Adani Defence Systems & Technologies**.

For TNPSC and Strategic Defense aspirants, this milestone represents a premier study focus under 'Science and Technology, Indigenisation of Technology, and Unmanned Systems in Warfare' modules.
