The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has told both public and private hospitals to end the reuse of single-use medical devices and disposable surgical items. Reuse can lead to cross-infection, malfunction and weaker device performance, particularly in critical care. The order covers cardiology, nephrology, oncology and neurosurgery devices, as well as those for cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS). Items marked for single use must be handled as per the original manufacturer's instructions. State health authorities and drug controllers will inspect, monitor and act on violations. The practice may breach the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the Medical Devices Rules, 2017 and the Clinical Establishments Act, 2010.
