Scientists have identified the desert moss Syntrichia caninervis as a possible support for future life on Mars. The moss withstands extreme dehydration, freezing and intense radiation. It can lose most of its water, go dormant and quickly restart photosynthesis once moisture returns. In experiments simulating Mars, it survived and regrew under low pressure and high carbon dioxide levels, and it can tolerate temperatures as low as -196°C.
