ICAR's Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has succeeded in breeding the mangrove clam Geloina erosa in captivity. Known as mud clams and locally as 'Kandal Kakka' in northern Kerala, these burrowing bivalves inhabit muddy, brackish mangrove swamps across the Indo-Pacific. As filter feeders they recycle nutrients and stabilise sediments, supporting mangrove ecosystems; captive breeding can aid aquaculture and conservation. This marks a notable research milestone for the institute.
