A new study warns that climate change could drastically reduce the area suitable for the Nilgiris Wood Pigeon (Columba elphinstonii) in the Western Ghats by the end of this century.
- The bird is endemic to the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot and lives in high-altitude evergreen forests, the "sky islands" of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
- Projections show a slight gain in habitat during 2021–2040, followed by a steep fall during 2081–2100.
- The IUCN currently classifies the species as Least Concern, but long-term warming may threaten its survival.
