Chola-period Gajasamharamurti sculptures in Tamil Nadu reflect the excellence of ancient bronze and stone art. Gajasamharamurti, called Yanai Uritha Thevar in Tamil, is Shiva's fierce form after slaying the elephant demon Gajasura, unlike Nataraja, the Cosmic Dancer.
The Veeratteswarar Temple at Vazhuvur, Mayiladuthurai district, one of the eight Ashta Veerattanam shrines, holds a famous bronze generally dated to Rajaraja I's reign. Other examples are at the Brahmapuriswarar Temple, Pullamangai (Thanjavur), and a Darasuram stone sculpture kept in the Thanjavur Maratha Palace art gallery.
