CERN Begins Third Long Shutdown of Large Hadron Collider (2026-2030) for High-Luminosity Upgrade

Save

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has begun the third Long Shutdown (LS3) of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

  • The shutdown will run from 2026 to 2030 to carry out major upgrades.
  • During this period the LHC will be converted into the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
  • The HL-LHC is expected to raise the collider's luminosity to as much as 10 times its original design capacity.

Higher luminosity means more particle collisions, giving physicists more data for their experiments.
