CDRI Framework: 57% of Tamil Nadu's Telecom Towers Face High Cyclonic Wind Risk

Save

The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) studied the disaster exposure of telecom towers in Assam, Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand. In Tamil Nadu, 57% of the 48,416 towers are located in zones of high or very high cyclonic wind risk, while 33% face flood vulnerability. Of Assam's 18,388 towers, 83% are in very high cyclonic wind zones, 43% are highly exposed to floods and 5% to landslides. The Disaster Risk and Resilience Assessment Framework, developed along with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Department of Telecommunications, recommends stronger towers, raised generators, battery backup, alternate communication networks and satellite connectivity to keep services running in disasters.
