The Environment Ministry set greenhouse-gas emission-intensity targets for 208 more high-emitting units, through the GEI Target (Amendment) Rules, 2025. This brings petroleum refineries, petrochemicals, textiles and secondary aluminium under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme. Units that beat their targets can earn carbon credits, and those that miss them must buy credits. The total number of obligated entities is now 490.
