Boomerang Nebula Identified as the Coldest Known Natural Object in the Universe

Save
The Boomerang Nebula has been identified as the coldest naturally occurring object known in the universe, with a temperature of roughly -272°C, very close to absolute zero. It lies about 5,000 light-years away in the Centaurus constellation. The nebula is colder than the lowest temperature ever recorded in Antarctica and even colder than the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation that fills space. This extreme cold results from the rapid expansion of gas thrown off by a dying red giant star. Observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) helped scientists study its structure and ultra-cold gas outflow.
