BNP Wins Bangladesh's 13th Parliamentary Election; Tarique Rahman to Be PM

Save

Bangladesh held its 13th parliamentary election in February 2026, the first since the 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party won by a landslide, and its chairman Tarique Rahman, son of former PM Khaleda Zia (who died in December 2025) and Ziaur Rahman, is set to become Prime Minister. An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had ruled since 2024. The 'July Charter', drafted by the National Consensus Commission, proposes reforms including more women's representation, PM term limits and judicial independence, to be put to a referendum.
