The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has started India's first programme in which fishermen themselves remove invasive fish and restock native species, at the Ujani Reservoir in Maharashtra. The drive targets the invasive suckermouth catfish, Tilapia and African catfish, which have harmed native fish diversity and hurt the livelihoods of local fishing communities. The initiative combines clearing these alien species with restoring native fish populations in the reservoir.
