India has begun the commercial transition and pilot-scale production of bio-based, biodegradable Polylactic Acid (PLA) plastics under the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy. A 100 Tonnes Per Annum (TPA) pilot facility is being set up at Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, using farm feedstock such as sugarcane molasses and bagasse. PLA is a thermoplastic made from fermented plant material like sugarcane, corn and cassava, and can be industrially composted into water, carbon dioxide and organic matter. It can cut dependence on petroleum plastics and be used in compostable packaging, agricultural films and consumer goods.
