Bhutan becomes first country in WHO South-East Asia Region to eliminate dog-transmitted rabies

Save

Bhutan has become the first country in the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia Region to eliminate dog-transmitted rabies as a public health problem. Rabies is a viral infection of the central nervous system that is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, and spreads mainly through bites and saliva of infected animals. Dogs cause about 99% of human cases worldwide. Rabies kills roughly 59,000 people a year globally, about one-third of them in India, which targets zero human rabies deaths by 2030 under the National Rabies Control Programme.
