Assam's population of the endangered pygmy hog (Porcula salvania) has grown from 6 in 1996 to 194 through captive breeding. The world's smallest and rarest wild pig is listed Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme (PHCP) began after six hogs were captured from Manas National Park in 1996; reintroduction started in 2008, and the animals now live in Manas, Orang, Sonai-Rupai and Bornadi protected areas. The target is 300 by 2040, involving the Assam Forest Department, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, the IUCN Wild Pig Specialist Group and MoEFCC.
