A two-hectare plot in Khalingduar Reserve Forest, Udalguri district, Assam, will be restored as elephant habitat using biochar. The International Elephant Foundation (IEF) is supporting the work. Invasive species such as Lantana camara, Chromolaena odorata and Mikania micrantha will be heated under limited oxygen to make biochar, which improves soil and helps native plants regrow. This circular approach turns invasive biomass into a soil amendment, and better forest food supply may reduce human-elephant conflict by keeping elephants away from farms.
