Ahead of the AI Impact Summit 2026, India unveiled its first framework for governing Artificial Intelligence, opting for guiding principles instead of a standalone AI statute. The framework is anchored in seven 'sutras', namely accountability, trust, safety, transparency, fairness, sustainability and innovation. Institutionally, it proposes two bodies: a coordination group for national AI governance, and an AI Safety Institute to handle standards and risk testing. Applications considered high-risk, because they affect safety, rights or livelihoods, will be required to have human oversight and to submit transparency reports.
