Ahmedabad’s Kankaria Becomes India’s First 'Water Neutral' Railway Depot

Sustainable Railways: Saving 1.6 Lakh Litres Daily

The Kankaria Coaching Depot in Ahmedabad (Western Railway) has achieved the milestone of becoming India’s first 'water neutral' railway depot. Through advanced recycling systems, the depot ensures that its net freshwater consumption is offset by treated and reused water.

Technological Innovation

  • Phytoremediation: The depot uses a natural process called phytoremediation, utilizing specific plants to clean and treat wastewater without heavy chemicals.

  • Water Savings: It saves approximately 1.60 lakh litres of water every day.

  • Filtration: The treated water undergoes further filtration and UV disinfection before being used for cleaning railway coaches and non-potable operations.

For Environment and Science aspirants, this is a prime example of 'Nature-based Solutions' (NbS) in industrial infrastructure.
