In All India Judges Association v. Union of India, the Supreme Court told seven States, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, to raise the retirement age of district judges from 60 to 62. The extension depends on a suitability assessment by the High Court at 60. District judges are part of the subordinate judiciary under Articles 233-237. The ruling is tied to the backlog of over 5.18 crore cases in district courts.
