The Tamil Nadu Home Department has amended the rules to raise the upper age limit for Home Guards from 58 to 60 years.
- The change applies to re-appointment and extension of service of Home Guards.
- The Tamil Nadu Home Guards Organisation was set up in 1963 to assist the police in maintaining law and order.
- Home Guards help during emergencies such as floods, fires and epidemics, and also support traffic and crowd management.
- The sanctioned strength is about 16,122 personnel, including men and women.
