India's Cheetah Count Reaches 53 as Jwala Gives Birth to Five Cubs; Two Cheetahs Roam into Rajasthan

Save

India's cheetah population has risen to 53 after the cheetah Jwala gave birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park, taking the number of India-born cubs to 33. Separately, two India-born cheetahs, KP2 and KP3, were tracked in the Mangrol range of Baran and the Banjh Amli Conservation Reserve in Rajasthan, 60-70 km from Kuno. Project Cheetah permits such inter-State movement within the Kuno-Gandhi Sagar landscape and backs a planned 17,000 sq. km corridor covering 7 districts of Rajasthan and 8 of Madhya Pradesh. Cheetahs became extinct in India in 1952.
