A granite Vishnu idol estimated to be about 500 years old was recovered from the dry bed of the Palar river at Puliyankannu village in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu. The sculpture measures roughly 2 feet in height and 1.5 feet in width. Local historians attribute it to the Vijayanagara period, an era that saw extensive temple building in the region. Although the head is slightly damaged, two arms, including the one bearing the chakra, are intact.
Under the Indian Treasure Trove Act, 1878, any treasure found buried more than one foot below the ground is treated as government property and must be surrendered to the authorities.
