Excavations by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) at Malayadipatti village in Tenkasi district have yielded a 5th-century Sangam-period hero stone inscription. It lay inside a stepped brick well used in the Sangam age and later filled with stones and bricks. The stone measures 1 metre by 0.30 metre and carries four lines in a script transitional between Tamil-Brahmi and Vattezhuthu. It names Karukkan, Sulagan, Nannang and Kodiyan, and honours Nannang Kodiyan, son of Karukkan Sulagan. Like Sangam hero stones from Pulimankombai, Aappanur and Mallikapuram, it bears no warrior figure. Other finds shed light on Sangam-era life, occupations and trade.
