The Tamil Nadu Government has revised its maternity leave rules to give women employees wider benefits and more flexibility.
- Women can now avail 365 days of maternity leave for one more delivery even if their first delivery resulted in twins. Earlier, the old service rules allowed only 2 to 6 weeks in such special cases.
- Women with two or more surviving children can get up to 12 weeks of leave on full salary.
- The change follows rulings of the Supreme Court of India (2025) and the Madras High Court (2026).
- It draws on the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 and the Tamil Nadu Fundamental Service Rules, 1922.
