Enrolment of women in higher education in Tamil Nadu has risen by 34% thanks to the Pudhumai Penn scheme, which gives Rs 1,000 a month to girl students pursuing college education. About eight lakh students have benefited. A State Planning Commission study found that girls from rural areas gained more than their urban peers. The scheme aims to encourage girls' higher studies and reduce dropouts after school.
