International Whale Shark Day is observed on August 30 to build awareness about protecting whale sharks. The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) launched the 'Save the Whale Shark Campaign' along coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. The whale shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest fish on Earth, is a keystone marine species found along India's entire coast, with the biggest aggregation off Gujarat. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
