Tamil Nadu has issued the Tamil Nadu Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Policy, 2026. Over its three-year validity, the policy aims to add at least 2.5 GW (10 GWh) of battery storage, which should reduce reliance on costly power purchases and support renewable energy. Transmission and wheeling charges will be waived for 10 years, subject to approval by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC). Any new solar or solar-hybrid project of 1 MW or more must set up BESS that can discharge at least 10% of the project's installed solar capacity.
