A history-sheeter was sent to judicial custody for breaching an externment order issued by the Greater Chennai City Police, which invoked Section 51A of the Madras City Police Act, 1888. It is the first time in about 25 years that the Act has been used to imprison someone for such a violation. An externment order lets the Police Commissioner expel from the city persons whose activities threaten people or property. The action is part of a drive against rowdy elements entering Chennai.
