From January 2027, the Union government will revise the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) so that it better records gig work on digital platforms, unpaid caregiving and household chores, volunteering and trainee work. The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under MoSPI will redesign the survey and its schedule. A separate Second Stage Stratum (SSS) will pick out households with at least one digital platform worker, widening gig-worker coverage. New questions will cover cooking, cleaning, childcare and care of elderly, sick or disabled persons, along with own-use production and unpaid trainee work, which the PLFS did not capture separately before. Sample allocation and stratification will also be updated.
