The Tamil Nadu government has formally notified the Tamil Nadu State Mental Healthcare Regulations, 2026. They lay down minimum standards for infrastructure, staffing, professional qualifications and patient care in mental health establishments, which are grouped into five categories such as psychiatric departments, de-addiction centres and psychosocial rehabilitation centres. Physical restraint may be used only to prevent immediate harm, with a psychiatrist's approval and proper records. Patients are also assured family visits, communication facilities and a grievance redress mechanism.
