World Rhino Day is observed on September 22 to raise awareness about protecting the five surviving rhino species: White, Black, Greater One-horned, Javan and Sumatran. Only about 27,000 rhinos remain in the wild, compared with nearly 5 lakh a century ago. India is home to the Greater One-horned Rhinoceros, with nearly 4,000 found in India and Nepal. The 2026 theme is “Keep the Five Alive”.
