International Women's Day, observed on 8 March, carried the 2026 theme "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls". The occasion also highlighted the United Nations' declaration of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer. In India, about 80% of rural women work in agriculture and perform nearly 70% of farm work, contributing 75% of crop production, 79% of horticulture and 95% of animal husbandry and fisheries work. Yet only about 13.9% of agricultural landholdings are in women's names. Rising male migration from villages has led to the 'feminisation of agriculture', and climate change adds to women's vulnerability.
