Two new telescopes in Ladakh, along with an upgrade to one already operating there, received approval in the Union Budget 2026. The National Large Solar Telescope is planned at Merak, close to Pangong Tso, and will be used to study the Sun and space weather. Inside the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve, the National Large Optical-Near Infrared Telescope will be constructed to observe stars, exoplanets and the early universe. In addition, the existing Himalayan Chandra Telescope at Hanle is set to get a bigger segmented mirror.
