Honoring the Vanguard of Healthcare: Conferred on International Nurses Day

At a solemn and prestigious state function organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 12, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu presented the highly esteemed National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 to 15 outstanding nursing professionals. Conferred annually on International Nurses Day—which commemorates the birth anniversary of modern nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale—these honors recognize the selfless, meritorious, and high-stakes service rendered by healthcare warriors to society.

The Scope of the Award

Instituted originally in 1973 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the award structure covers four vital pillars of institutional medicine: Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), registered nurses, nursing officers, and veteran nursing educators. Each of the 15 awardees was presented with an official Certificate of Merit, a physical medal of honor, and a tax-exempt cash bounty of ₹1 lakh.

Remarkable Stories of Courage and Lifelong Dedication

The 2026 list highlighted several stellar individuals who went above and beyond the call of duty in the country's most isolated terrains:

  • Aysha Beebi K (Lakshadweep): Conferred the award for exceptional courage and professional acumen displayed during a high-risk emergency midnight childbirth delivery on an evacuation helicopter flight from Andrott to a mainland medical college. Her critical operational decisions managed to safely deliver a 1.5kg baby boy just as the ambulance crossed the hospital gates.

  • Kulwinder Parhi (Ladakh): Celebrated for near-unparalleled resilience, providing close to three decades (30 years) of continuous frontline public health and maternal care outreach across the sub-zero, high-altitude mountain passes of Ladakh.

  • Diverse Fields of Service: Other notable mentions included Dr. Sharwan Kumar Dhaka from Delhi for extensive Covid-19 immunization outreach, and Major General Lissamma P.V. from the Army Medical Services for transforming military inpatient care strategies.

For Pharmacy (D.Pharm), nursing, and health-governance aspirants, tracking national health rewards serves as a core case-study addition for answering essays on India's healthcare infrastructure and human resource management.
