International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Rwanda Genocide Observed on April 7

Save

The International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Rwanda Genocide is observed on April 7. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2003 to remember the victims.

The genocide began on 7 April 1994, when the Tutsi minority was targeted by a Hutu-led government. In about 100 days, more than one million Tutsi were killed, along with moderate Hutu and others who resisted the violence. The day promotes peace through education and dialogue, and UNESCO supports genocide education to prevent discrimination and violence in the future.
