The first confidence motion in an Indian legislature traces back to the 1952 Aruppukottai Lok Sabha bypoll in Tamil Nadu, held after U. Muthuramalinga Thevar resigned the seat. The ruling Congress lost to M. D. Ramasamy of the Forward Bloc (Marxist Group). Following the defeat, Chief Minister C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) sought a vote of confidence in the Madras Legislative Assembly. Finance Minister C. Subramaniam moved the motion on 30 June 1952; after debate from 1 to 3 July, it was passed 200–151 on 4 July 1952, with support from the Kisan Lok Party, Muslim League and some Independents.
