First Sitting of the 17th TN Legislative Assembly

The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly convened its first session on May 11, 2026, marking a new chapter in the state's governance. Sholavandan MLA Karuppaiah M.V. was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan. The inaugural session was dedicated to the oath-taking of all newly elected MLAs, with the formal election for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker scheduled for May 12, 2026.

CM Resigns from Dual Constituency

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who secured victories in both Perambur and Tiruchi (East), has officially resigned as MLA from the Tiruchi East constituency, choosing to retain Perambur.

  • Protocol: The resignation letter was submitted by Ministers K.A. Sengottaiyan and P. Venkataramanan to Principal Secretary K. Srinivasan.
  • By-poll: This resignation mandates the Election Commission to conduct a by-election for the Tiruchi East constituency within the next six months.

For TNPSC and Polity aspirants, the appointment of a Pro-tem Speaker (Article 180) and the rules regarding dual-constituency representation are high-yield topics.
