Historic Inaugural Session of the 17th Assembly


On May 11, 2026, the newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) officially took their oath of office, marking the commencement of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The ceremony was presided over by the Pro-tem Speaker, ensuring the constitutional transition of the house.


Key Highlights of the Session:


  • Oath Administration: Pro-tem Speaker M. V. Karuppaiah administered the oath to the elected members. He was previously sworn in by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.

  • Speaker Nomination: Chief Minister Vijay officially nominated J. C. D. Prabhakar (Thousand Lights MLA) for the post of Speaker.

  • Deputy Speaker Nomination: M. Ravisankar (Thuraiyur MLA) was nominated for the post of Deputy Speaker.

  • Assembly Strength: The effective strength of the house currently stands at 233 members following the resignation of CM Vijay from the Tiruchi East seat.
