The 17th Petersberg Climate Dialogue has reaffirmed the commitment to multilateral climate action despite rising global tensions. Started by Germany in 2010, the annual meeting is the first major climate ministerial ahead of COP31 under the UNFCCC. Multilateralism treats climate change as a global problem and promotes cooperation through Nationally Determined Contributions, supported by conventions such as the UNFCCC, UNCBD and UNCCD. It upholds climate justice through the principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibilities and channels funds through the GEF and the GCF. Challenges include slow decision-making, developed countries' unmet $100 billion funding pledge and geopolitical conflicts.
