Gujarat's Barda Wildlife Sanctuary emerges as second home for Asiatic lions after about 144 years

Save

Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat has become a key second habitat for Asiatic lions, which returned there after roughly 144 years. Situated in the Saurashtra region across Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts, Barda spans about 192.31 sq km and was notified as a sanctuary in 1979. The 2025 population estimate puts its lions at 17 — 6 adults and 11 cubs. The comeback started when a male lion dispersed from Gir in January 2023, after which five females were relocated. By expanding habitat beyond Gir, Barda reduces dependence on one core area; a better prey base and avoiding human–lion conflict remain vital. The Government of India started Project Lion in 2020.
