The 14th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW), listed for October 18/24, is observed to build awareness of lead poisoning and encourage steps that prevent lead exposure, particularly among children. The 2026 theme is "From Detection to Prevention." Lead mostly enters the body when contaminated dust, soil, water, food or other materials are inhaled or swallowed. As a cumulative toxicant, it can harm the brain, kidneys, liver, cardiovascular system and blood, and builds up in bones and teeth over time. Key sources are lead-based paint, mining and smelting, recycling of batteries, tainted spices, cosmetics, toys, ceramics, e-waste and polluted water.
