A 13th-century Pandya copper coin and a Pallava-period Sivalingam have been discovered near Budalur in Thanjavur district. The 3.30 g coin belongs to Jatavarman Sundara Pandiyan I (1250-1284 CE) and was issued in his first regnal year, 1251 CE. It shows a human figure on one side and an upright fish between two lamps on the other, with the Tamil legend "Ellanthalaiyanan". A Sivalingam about 3 feet in height, length and width was found in a nearby grove. The finds came from the Sengamedu mound between Ilangadu and Niyamam villages.
